YuKonstruct is building the main effigy for Burning Away the Winter Blues. Come watch the effigy in action and burn away your blues!
On March 19th, 2016, Unlikely Events Yukon (formerly Yukon Educational Theater) will be presenting the 18th edition of Burning Away the Winter Blues, an event that has become a tradition for the Whitehorse community and beyond. This celebration marks the transition from winter to spring and is rooted in symbolic ritual.
Participants can park their car at the Robert Service campground and board the free shuttle to the SS Klondike National Historic Site. From there, people are invited to join a torch-lit procession along the Yukon River, with drumming, singing and of course the effigies created by individuals and local artists.
Once at the Robert Service campground, where live music and fire spinning brighten up the night, attendees’ winter blues are collected and thrown into a giant bonfire along with the effigies.
The procession starts at 9pm from the SS Klondike National Historic Site.
