Holiday hand sewn bird ornaments

Christmas is coming up and decoration are getting put up! Are you a do-it-yourself type of decorator? Looking for a great hand crafted gift? By the end of this workshop you will be well on your way to creating a beautiful bird Christmas ornament. All materials provided. All sewing done by hand. The original pattern for this project was designed by Michael Fulkerson.

Regardless of how many birds get sewn during the workshop, you will be sent home with enough material to have a few bird ornaments to have on your tree!

About the instructor: Susan Glynn-Morris is not an expert seamstress, but that’s what makes this sewing project so great – you don’t have to be! After 40+ birds she has worked out the kinks and managed to produce some beautiful ornaments. And you can too!

Winterval Giant Lantern Making

Winterval, presented by Unlikely Events Yukon, is a 7-year tradition offering activities designed to get Whitehorse in the Holiday Spirit. The parade on December 5th travels from the top to the bottom of Main Street, where we there is a Tree Lighting Ceremony and an Arts Festival showcasing local artists and performers.

This year, local visual artist Helen O’Connor will be facilitating paper lantern-making workshops and will construct a large fabric lantern to be installed outside the Old Fire Hall.

Help make the giant fabric lantern at YuKonstruct on the evening of December 2nd. Everyone is welcome!

Members are still able to use the shop with the awareness that it may be busy and that the Winterval workers have rented the space and therefor have priority of the equipment.

Winterval Santa Clause Parade

This past weekend, YuKonstruct was a part of Yukon Educational Theater’s 7th annual Winterval Santa Clause Parade.

Inspired by Aidan Chopra’s cardboard Grumman F4F-4 costume, we decided to make laser-cut cardboard airplanes for some of our youngest members to wear in the parade.

The planes were designed by Chris Lloyd, one of our members, in SketchUp. Once the plans were finished, preparing the cardboard, cutting it on the laser and assembling the planes was a real team effort! You can read all about the step-by-step process of designing and building the planes on Instructables.

Air North donated the custom vinyl decals for the wings and tails, which really finished the look!

The planes were a huge hit with the kids and everyone at the parade. If you’d like to make your own here at YuKonstruct all you need is cardboard and safety training on the Epilog laser.
