NEW HOME: NORTHLIGHT INNOVATION

The makerspace and co-working space moved together into their new home located on 2180 2nd Avenue.

On September 4th, 2018 – Yukonstruct Society opened the doors of NorthLight Innovation after several months of renovation to the old Super Valu grocery store on Second Avenue.

The 24,000 sq ft facility managed and operated by local non-profit Yukonstruct is now the rallying point for all of their members, consolidating their organization and services under one roof along with facility partners Yukon College and Yukon Development Corporation.

The space includes:

Makespace, the community workshop. Incorporating elements of machine shops, workshops and studios – where the maker community come together to share resources and knowledge to build and create.

Cospace, the shared workspace. Downtown Whitehorse, the hub for the Yukon’s entrepreneurial community to work, collaborate and build a strong community of visionaries.

Launchspace, a new collective initiative to foster business development and innovation in the North, including conferences, programs and business services through the Canada Business Network that help early-stage entrepreneurs in the Yukon take their ideas to the next level.

NorthLight Innovation houses 40 hot desks, 16 dedicated desks, 12 private offices, 8 studios, 1 event space, 2 classrooms, 1 boardroom, 2 meeting rooms, 2 lounge spaces, 2 woodshops, 1 metal shop, 1 digital fabrication lab, 1 sewing loft and 1 hackerspace.

YUKONSTRUCT RECEIVES THE NATIONAL STARTUP CANADA ENTREPRENEUR SUPPORT AWARD IN OTTAWA!

This category rewards government organizations, not-for-profits, academic institutions and private for-profit businesses that demonstrate excellence in advancing Canadian entrepreneurship through their leadership, innovation and impact. Honouring this recognition, we continue to strive to foster innovation, creativity, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

YuKonstruct Makerspace Society has been federally recognized in the Federal Budget 2018 for its contribution to the innovation ecosystem in the territories.

While succeeding as somewhat separate entities, our dream was to bring together, and collaborate with, all our talented members and partners, under the same roof!

In March 2018, Federal and Territorial Governments and Northern Vision Development announced their financial support for the new Yukon Innovation Hub. Yukon College and Yukon Development Corporation have partnered on the launching of the facility by agreeing to be major anchor tenants. YuKonstruct converted a long-vacant building into a multi-tenant facility designed to unleash creativity and innovation, allowing for bolder ideas and greater possibilities.

As of July 2018, YuKonstruct Makerspace Society is operated and governed by a passionate team of 10 staff members and 9 Board members. The society counts over 170 active members.

THE COMMUNITY IS THE HEART OF YUKONSTRUCT

Staff members and contractors joined the adventure along the road to support the growing operations of both facilities. Staff and volunteers collaborated in programming, providing support, planning events, and general facility operations. In order to allow volunteers to focus on creating, teaching, and learning staff took on most of the administrative, operational, and fiscal responsibilities.

The first staff member was Logan Sherk who held an acting ED role, until Jaret Slipp, was hired in August 2016 as the first permanent Executive Director.

In 2016, (co)space became the host of Start-Up Whitehorse and Canada Business Network.

YUKONSTRUCT MAKERSPACE SOCIETY LAUNCHED (CO)SPACE, A RALLYING POINT FOR GROWING THE YUKON’S ENTREPRENEURIAL COMMUNITY

The society added a coworking space downtown, in a separate location from our Makerspace. (co)space is the productive, collaborative and community-driven space for members to do their work as freelancers, entrepreneurs or small businesses. Similar to YuKonstruct, a membership to (co)spaceprovides you access to a unique workspace. We offer amenities such as high speed internet, a productive work area, access to meeting rooms, and most importantly a community of awesome people.

The organization and its two spaces emerged quickly and organically thanks to the passion and hard work of a group of dedicated volunteers. The support of our generous sponsors and partnerships with community groups and businesses throughout the years have allowed us to grow and develop.

WE ARE THE FIRST CANADIAN MAKERSPACE NORTH OF 60

In September we opened the doors of our 135 Industrial Road location with a full slate of weekly workshops. We quickly built membership to over 80 makers, with over 100 others participating in various workshops. A ‘Core Team’ of over a dozen dedicated volunteers emerged and became the driving forcebehind YuKonstruct.

THANK YOU to our founding members: Alessia Guthrie, Andrew Kalek, Benjamin Sanders, Alison Pakula, Logan Drq Sherk, Allison Button, Chris Lloyd, John Glynn-Morris, Michelle Clusiau, Sam Fleming, Michael Pealow, Barrett W. Horne, Tom Bamford.
